I’m not sure I ever imagined writing anything with that headline! I apologize in advance that this is a rather long post, but it is with very good reason.
We live in exciting times. One of the reasons I fell in love with Medical Aesthetics, was that as an industry it is attracting brilliant minds, incredible levels of research and development, focused on solving age old problems that traditional medicine has not.
In my many years of family medicine, I have encountered literally hundreds of patients who suffer from incontinence. The majority of these are women, but many are men. It is an age old problem.
For women (I can talk with some experience here as a Mother of two boys) pregnancy and childbirth can take an exacting toll on our bodies.
Other common factors are weight gain, ageing and menopause. These play a part in causing muscle laxity in the pelvic floor.
Types of Urinary Incontinence
We usually think of two main categories of incontinence:
Stress incontinence: Leaking of urine with coughing, sneezing, sex, or impact exercise, like running and jumping. This is related to damaged and/or weak pelvic floor muscles, and is common in younger women who have given birth vaginally.
Urge incontinence: Sudden and unpredictable overwhelming urge to urinate, with leaking of small to large amounts of urine. This sometimes also goes along with needing to go often that can occur day and night. The problem is thought to be due to spasms of the bladder. A lot of things can worsen symptoms, such as caffeine, diuretics (“water pills” used for high blood pressure), drinking too much fluid, and bladder infections.
The most common form of incontinence, called “mixed,” has features of both these categories. But the kind of incontinence really doesn’t matter. What women need to know is that there are solutions.
The healthcare solution has always been a mixed bag of advice, which includes losing weight, limit fluid intake (yes seriously!!!), exercise (Kegel squeezes can work, but it’s important to do them correctly) and “bladder training”; Scheduling bathroom visits can help women to “train” an overactive bladder.
If none of these work, then there are some prescribed medicines that can help, but in my experience these rarely work. Plus, there are many side effects, such as sleepiness, confusion, dry eyes, dry mouth, and constipation.
The truth is, reports have found that an estimated 45% of women experience some form of urinary incontinence at some point in their lives. That’s almost half of all women! It’s a very big deal. 6.8 million in North America are diagnosed with mild to moderate incontinence.
Of the five women in our workplace, four are momma’s (myself included) and all suffer from some form of incontinence related to childbirth.
Jaime was willing to talk openly about how it affects her life, and it’s easy to see the impact.
Have we really become conditioned to accept changes to our bodies as inevitable?
Ask yourself what other condition has millions of sufferers and is not a topic of common conversation? Honestly, the more I have focused on this subject matter, I cannot for the life of me understand why this is not been talked about!!! And it kind of is….its embedded in TV adverts everywhere. There is a whole industry for adults around incontinence, pads, bedding, clothing, adapted seating…the list goes on.
Add up the cost of pads alone in a 1 year period and it is in the hundreds of dollars and for some as much as $900 a year. Never mind the inconvenience and indignity.
The Kegel
You may recall I mentioned exercise earlier. The Kegel.
Kegels do actually work if performed correctly and if performed consistently over a period of time.
In my experience, many find them difficult to do correctly and for any length of time close to what is needed. Consistency, and, finding the time are the most common obstacles. Let’s be honest being a working Mother is busy enough right?
Correctly performed Kegel + Time i.e consistent training = Relief from incontinence
Enter BTL Industries.
BTL Industries have been working for many years with advanced research and development into High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic technology (HIFEM®). This is the technology that surrounds Emsculpt. Emsculpt focuses its energy to a physical depth of around 4 cm, which is why it’s so effective for abs, and glutes, and under arms.
BTL imagined creating a type of HIFM device that could penetrate the human body to a depth of 10cm. Because HIFM is harmless to the human body (it’s just magnets) the theory was that a correctly focused HIFM at the right frequency could induce the perfect muscle contraction. and the theory was proven correct in 22 clinical studies.
The contraction was in fact so perfect that when HIFM is focused into the pelvic floor, it contracts the muscle far beyond the point at which a human can voluntarily contract a muscle.
It is so precise that when used in the hands of a Healthcare Professional, the patient experiences the equivalent of 11,000 involuntary Kegels in 28 minutes!
You read that correctly.
Meet the Emsella HIFM Chair. Notice that the patient is fully clothed and relaxed.
Emsella is a very, very sophisticated state of the art multi-million dollar chair.
This procedure is a truly walk-in walk-out procedure. The only thing you take off is your jewelry!
There is no invasive procedure of any kind, before or after, no downtime and the experience is mildly pleasurable. Most patients read a book.

This is the Result of 2 Treatments Per Week for 3 Weeks

Emsella is FDA Cleared for mild to moderate stress incontinence and hyperactive bladder and 95% of patients have significant improvement.
Have we really become conditioned to accept changes to our bodies as inevitable?
The Sex Part
Back to the Kegel….
Emsella’s ability to strengthen pelvic muscles may also enable patients to more easily achieve orgasm, have stronger orgasm’s and increase sensation leading to a positive effect on sexual wellness and intimate relationships.
And….it works on Men!
BTL is bust applying to Health Canada and the FDA for recognition of its clinical studies that Emsella not only treats men for incontinence but treats them for Erectile Dysfunction.
We are positively approaching this at WMA. If you think this will be of help to you, then book a free consultation, and we will show you the machine in a free trial, so that you are fully educated as to how it works, how it feels and what can be expected.
Emsella is priced to be affordable at $1,800 for six treatments.
