Latisse

Latisse is the only FDA and Health Canada-approved prescription treatment for inadequate eyelash growth. Bimatoprost, applied nightly to the lash base, gradually and meaningfully lengthens, thickens, and darkens your natural lashes over 16 weeks. Not extensions. Not a serum with a list of ingredients that suggest results. A regulated pharmaceutical, physician-prescribed, with clinical studies that document exactly what it achieves.

How Latisse works

Bimatoprost, the active ingredient in Latisse, prolongs the anagen (active growth) phase of the hair follicle cycle. Normally, lash follicles spend a significant portion of their cycle in a resting phase (the catagen and telogen phases) during which they produce no hair. Latisse extends the window in which each follicle is actively growing, allowing it to produce a longer, thicker, and more pigmented lash before cycling out.

The result is measurable and consistent. Clinical studies document an average 25% increase in lash length, a 106% increase in fullness, and an 18% darkening of lash color at 16 weeks of continuous use. The improvement builds gradually from about week eight onward, with the full effect visible at week 16.

Because Latisse requires a prescription, you must be assessed by a physician before starting. At WMA, this is done during a brief consultation that confirms candidacy, reviews any contraindications, and issues the prescription. All in a single visit.

Who it suits

Latisse is appropriate for adults with hypotrichosis of the eyelashes, the clinical term for insufficient lash growth. In practice, this means anyone who wants longer, fuller lashes and has realistic expectations of the timeline and maintenance involved. It is also used by patients who have lost lashes through aging, chemotherapy, or follicular conditions where some activity remains.

Patients with a history of intraocular pressure problems, current eye inflammation, or very sensitive eyes should discuss their situation before starting. Contact lens wearers can use Latisse. Lenses are removed before application and reinserted 15 minutes later.

It is worth noting what Latisse does not do: it does not work on the lower lashes, and it does not permanently alter the follicle. If the treatment is discontinued, lashes return gradually to their pretreatment state over several months.

Daily application:

Latisse is applied once nightly to the upper lash margin only, using the sterile single-use applicator provided, depositing one drop along the lash line in a motion similar to liquid eyeliner. Any excess that contacts the lower lid or cheek is blotted away gently. Lenses are removed first; reinsert 15 minutes after application.

The most common side effects are mild eye redness or itching in the first few weeks of use, which typically resolves as the eyes adjust. A small percentage of patients experience mild darkening of the skin at the point of consistent contact. This reverses with discontinuation. Using only the applicator (not a brush or cotton pad) and blotting excess carefully minimizes this.

Results

By week 8, most patients notice their lashes appear longer and darker. By week 16, the full result is present: consistently longer, denser, and richer lashes that most people attribute to exceptional natural genetics or excellent mascara. The clinical numbers (25% longer, 106% fuller) translate to a visible difference that is obvious in person.

The transformation is one of those changes that affects the entire face. Lashes frame the eyes, and the difference between sparse, average lashes and full, defined ones is significant in photographs and in person.
